When nothing goes right

The first days we just recovered behind our laptops and chilled around in the CBD. Slowly we started

to look for jobs.  After leaving our 2 great
relocations, we had to look for new transport for the east coast. The only way to experience it in total freedom and don’t spend all your money on hostels is to buy a Van. So after a lot of searching I bought my first campervan! A 1984 Toyota Hiace, with high top roof and 315000k on it. I bought it in Glenelg, a small suburb at the south west side of Adelaide with a really nice atmosphere and beach. Nigel, the man who sold the van to me was really friendly and helped me a lot. He even invited Flo and me to stay in his house for a couple days. Nigel, if you read this: THANKS A LOT! I did a great deal buying it, but it was empty on the inside. So I had a lot of work to do.  I started to think about a bed, building some kind of kitchen to cook and find a way to put all stuff away.  While Flo was working I worked on my Van every day, drawing plans, going to Bunnings and Ikea 7 times, sawing wood, screwing boards…

In the weekend I went out to the Woolshed, a pretty chill bar/club to have some fun.  The evening started quite but after some beers and riding the rodeo we met some locals and it became a grace evening. Marion, a friend we met in Darwin came along for a couple days. We went to see the great Art Gallery and went on a bike to squeeze our own juices. Next day we spend at the beach with some friends of the hostel playing beachvolley and watching sunset.

After a long search of work I decided to take a day class to get my whitecard.  I could immediately use it since I found some work as a laborer at Cavalia, the Canadian horse show that goes all over the world.  Never thought I would be paid to pull fucking horsecocks all day!

No worries, it’s just a kind of electric cable. The showweekend was finished and we had to bring all the tents down.  The second workday was really heavy putting all long heavy electricity cables back in big bins.

Flo started to work with Renniks, building tents for all kind of events in and around Adelaide. After my work at Cavalia I could join him.  The job was pretty good, sometimes really heavy but good hours and not bad money.  The first week the weather was hot and we worked in 37°C, over the limit where most laborers get a day off. The other day we had to work in the rain without stopping.  On Sunday evening I was writing on my blog and fell asleep during uploading some pics because off the slow wifi.  I woke up in the night and found my screen broke. I slept on it and it was completely damaged.  Bad luck and I had to get up at 5am to start working at 6. I can remember that Monday, screwing one specific screw (because it was a bit broke) at 6am in the morning and about 5:30 pm I saw that same screw again putting the tents down: what a long day!! A good thing was that we had some free coke and ice cream at the event during the day.  But luck turned once again against me.  My car didn’t start anymore when we finally could go home. We decided to get some rest first and then call road assistance the next day.

For the first time in my travel I couldn’t get sleep in the night although I was really tired. So I sneaked to the hostel kitchen to drink some milk. There I found my eating bag full of yoghurt, didn’t close the lid very well. Are you serious??  So there I stood at 11pm in my boxers in the kitchen taking a spoon together with an Irish friend eating the yoghurt from my eating bag, my new car broke, my laptop broke, what is going on here?! L

The second week we could only work 3 days and new year in Sydney was calling me so I decided to finish the Van, which was fixed again and make plans for the great ocean road.  We concluded the week with a weekend in the Barossa Valley. Maria & Jonathan, Flo & me, Josh & Jana and Dave were in to do some wine tasting. In the night we sat together eating some homemade veggie cookies and drinking beers while listening to Maria’s version of “the summer of 69”.  A great ending of my stay in Adelaide.

At Sunday we went back to Adelaide and I said goodbye to everyone to leave for my new adventure.
