Survival of the fittest

On sunday I leave with Flo and 4 new people to Darwin, a 2000 km trip through the middle of nowhere. Bummer:  Our car broke down after 20 min of riding. Bad luck or good luck? I decided with the guys to not travel with the girls at that point. I hadn’t a great feeling after all and now the car, no thanks.  If I want to cross 2000km of rough landscapes I want a reliable vehicle.

And that ride we found the next day after a long internet search.Flo, Shan and me joined Andy, a 29j old traveler from England. We left Broome on Tuesday and went to the next level of our travel. It didn’t took long to discover that Broome was a cornerstone in WA, with all we had done was a nice family adventure, but all that was waiting for us up north was the real outback. Here man were split from boys.

The first night after visiting Derby we camped somewhere, somewhere in the middle of nowhere. A storm passed by and forced us to watch a movie in the car before starting dinner. The annoying rain the storm left on our skin was a relief I begged for the next days.  Every day the sun burned us out of our tent before 6am, with some backing vocals of the local birds. My muscles felt empty ad weak.  We didn’t have airco or a fridge to store some drinks, so the only refreshment during the day with temperatures up to +-40°C and a killing humidity was warm water. It was difficult to drink enough liquids. The energy disappeared out of our bodies and easy 2k walks became deadly Sahara marathons. The heat also brought a strange smell in the car; we discovered at dinner time it was the chicken which we had to throw away.

It was in that heat that we did some part of the Gibb river, tunnel Creek, Windjana gorge, windham, kununura,  Keep River and Katherine.

The pleasure of passing a roadhouse and buying some cold drinks was a moment to look forward to. . Luckely the sweaty walks sometimes showed some great lagunes, waterfalls and gorges where refreshment was like a blessing of the gods. The first waterfall a baby crocodile joined us and we swam out quickly. I got back in on the other side to say hello to a well sizes lizard.  On our next sleeping spot we met 2 swedish girls: Kim and Mel. We travelled together to  Wolf Creek: the second biggest meteorite crater dated 30000y ago. A strange feeling came over us since these place is connected to the story of the wolf creek murderer in the 80-90’s. No one knows if he is still around…

One of the magic moments was the passing by Lake Argyle. We did one night of camping and just slept on the grass next to the car. The next morning we got into the swimming pool on the edge of the mountain with a magnificent lookout over the lake which is built up by a big dam.

In Katherine we splitted from the the girls and said goodbye to Andy who wanted to look for a job there. We tried to hitchhike without success. So a greyhound bus took us to Darwin.
